10 Birthday facts about Desmond Tutu

Today (October 7) marks Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 83rd birthday. Here are 10 things you probably did not know about his life. As seen on our sister site www.southerncourier.co.za

  1. Like his father, Tutu was a schoolteacher from 1954 to 1957.
  2. Tutu resigned his teaching post after the passage of the Bantu Education Act.
  3. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the first black Archbishop of Cape Town.
  4. Tutu gets credit for the term “Rainbow Nation”.
  5. In 1998, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  6. He appeared in an Off Broadway play in New York In October 2004.
  7. He is a member of The Elders.
  8. He wrote a children’s book.
  9. The Desmond Tutu House in Soweto is on a pretty cool street.
  10. Tutu has been nicknamed “The Arch”.
