Cancer walk to raise awareness

Local residents will walk to raise awareness of cancer.

THE first-ever cancer walk takes place this Saturday, 11 October with the aim of making South Durban communities aware of the dreaded disease.

The Cancer Walk: Walking for a Cure is part protest, part awareness campaign and is hosted by the Mothers’ Prayer Group, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) and Blue Roof Wellness Centre.

“The purpose of this walk is to create more awareness of the disease of cancer and a healthy lifestyle. Statistics show cancer is on the rise. Our aim is to raise our distress about the impacts chemical emissions have on the surrounding communities and the effect this is having on their health and quality of life,” said SDCEA communication and project officer, Noluthando Mbeje.

It will start at 8am at the Badulla Road sports grounds and proceed to the Engen Refinery, where local pastors will pray, before walkers head to the Highbury Road sports grounds where the walk ends and other activities are set to take place.
