Retirees explore Byrne Valley
The members also visited the little Anglican Church at Byrne and again, one of the parishioners gave them an interesting talk on the history of the church.

SOME 30 members of the Retired Persons Club (formerly KZ-NARPE) enjoyed a lovely outing up to Byrne near Richmond on Tuesday, 7 October.
They first enjoyed a look around the little village of Byrne and learned something of its history from one of its knowledgeable inhabitants whose ancestors came to South Africa on the ‘Minerva’ back in the 1800s.
They learned that the Minerva was wrecked in Durban Harbour following a very bad storm and although no lives were lost, all their farming equipment and households items were, so the survivors had to live in tents in Durban, depending on the charity of the Durban citizens, who were very generous towards these new settlers while they waited another six months for new equipment to arrive.
The members also visited the little Anglican Church at Byrne and again, one of the parishioners gave them an interesting talk on the history of the church. After this they enjoyed a lovely lunch at The Oaks before returning home in the afternoon, having enjoyed not only a very informative visit, but also the piece and quiet and beauty of the area as a whole.
