Ward 32 councilllor Protas Mngonyama said the operations will soon extend to Clairwood to ensure that all businesses are compliant with the law.

Mngonyama was talking after the City conducted a raid at the Durban CBD on May 25 where 29 suspected illegal immigrants were taken in for a verification process.

Following verification, 28 individuals were arrested for contravention of immigration-related legislation.

However, Mngonyama could not be drawn into commenting on which day operations will resume in Clairwood.

“The date cannot be announced yet as the individuals close their shops when the officials arrive. We want to conduct unannounced visits to ensure that businesses are compliant with the law and every person has valid documentation,” said Mngonyama.

The operation was launched by:

  • eThekwini Municipality in partnership with eThekwini Metro Police.
  • Department of Labour.
  • Home Affairs Immigration.
  • Private security companies.

The suspects appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court.
