Guiding Durban South youth to the right careers

The departments of health and social development held an informative talk for Grade 11 learners who are researching potential career paths.

GRADE 11 learners from Durban Academy and Wentworth Secondary were enlightened about prospective career paths at a career day at the Wentworth Youth Centre on May 22.

Importance of the conversation

This initiative was co-organised by the Wentworth hospital’s Gateway clinic and the Department of Social Development. Busisiwe Mqaise, registered HPCSA counsellor and one of the organisers, said the objective was to provide important insight for the learners.

“Grade 11 is a crucial academic year; learners can begin applying for further education. The aim of this career day was to encourage learners to be more purposeful about their future and try to think outside the box when it comes to careers. The hope is that learners are motivated to seek out diverse after-school opportunities to meet their individual needs. I believe that the sooner they start the more successful and effective they will be. Information can nurture healthier coping mechanisms should there be an unforeseen career challenge, which is a reality that needs resilience to overcome,” said Mqaise.

Speakers for the day

The day featured representatives from institutions such as the UKZN College of Health Sciences, OVC Durban, the Wentworth Youth Centre and the Department of Health District Office.

Their presentations encompassed detailed information regarding tertiary education, the possibilities for international employment, the options available through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and specific career paths within the healthcare domain.

Learners were afforded the opportunity to engage with the presenters and get additional resources.
