Underage drinking concern on Bluff
Police tackle underage drinking problem by handing out brochures.
BRIGHTON Beach SAP tackled the blight of underage drinking through an awareness campaign on the Bluff and in Clairwood last week.
On Thursday, 23 October police officers took to the streets to dispense brochures on underage drinking to the public in a programme that was the brainchild of Brighton Beach SAP crime prevention unit team leader, Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu.
“Seeing youngsters being intoxicated early in the mornings when we conduct patrols and stop and search operations and finding them intoxicated at illegal liquor outlets, is worrying for us as police members. We also find more incidents of assault occurring with the perpetrators being highly intoxicated. On the flip side, we also find those who are highly intoxicated becoming victims of assault and common robbery “said W/O Ndlovu.
Brighton Beach SAP requests people to report those selling to minors. “I urge community members to anonymously report those who sell or distribute alcohol to the youth, be it an illegal or legal liquor outlet. Alcohol makes children vulnerable to becoming victims of violent crimes including sexual violation,” said Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, who created the brochures.
Send a text message to the SMS hotline on 32211, visit www.crimeline.co.za or call the Crime Stop hotline on 08600-10111. A detailed address should be provided when making a report. If no fixed address is available, a detailed description of the location should be given.
Brighton Beach SAP management thanks Capt Le Roux and the Brighton Beach crime prevention team for their active participation in the public awareness campaign, ADT Security Services for sponsoring the brochures and the management and tenants of the Hillside Mall and Bluff Towers for their partnership.
