Health dept evaluates ECD centres

Health support for ECD centres in Wentworth.

ETHEKWENI Municipality environmental health officials are helping the Wentworth Early Childhood Development Forum (WECDF) improve their services.

“Community and home-based services must meet the needs of infants and young children and they should comply with health, nutrition, physical development, curriculum and water and environmental sanitation requirements,” said WECDF member and principal of Sunbeam Educare, Romany Roberts.

“The department of social development has to ensure young children in ECD centres are taken care of in the best way. It has a specific responsibility in terms of the ECD facilities as it is required to give its approval for the establishment or continuation of an early childhood facility, as a condition of registration of such a facility. The environmental health department is responsible for the assessment of ECD centres and issuing of health clearance certificates.

These officials are visiting all ECD sites in Wentworth to conduct the necessary assessments. “We welcome them into our community and into our ECD centres. We want to ensure we address any gaps identified and that young children are properly cared for in a safe and healthy ECD environment,” said Roberts.

The WECDF appeals to all members of the forum to co-operate and thanks the department for the work they are doing.
