Skills audit to identify gaps

SDB ABM hopes to improve skill level of locals.

THE South Durban Basin (SDB) will pilot a municipal programme aimed at determining skill levels and necessary interventions.

At a recent local economic development (LED) steering committee meeting at the SDB Area Based Management ABM office, Nontobeko Mdlalose from the skills development unit spoke of the municipality’s plans for a city-wide skills audit.

The audit will look into local skill levels and identify the skills gap with the intention of bringing in skills development interventions to address the determined shortages. The audit will be piloted in the SDB.

Dumile Khubane, enterprise development co-ordinator from the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also discussed the programmes available to support small business development in the area.

“The SDB ABM is keen to engage with and link various stakeholders in the SDB to economic opportunities as our key mandate remains promotion of economic activities and that will result in the decrease of unemployment and poverty,” said SDB LED co-ordinator, Fanele Masombuka of the LED meeting.

SDB ABM manager, Eurakha Singh, added: “As key stakeholders working in the LED space, we are aware of the strategic infrastructure projects such as Durban dig-out port, road and rail upgrades, and so on, and we are committed to bringing opportunities associated with these projects to the people of the SDB.”
