Scholars abducted, robbed after school

“We trust the public transport in the area. We never thought this could happen. This is the first time something like this has happened to pupils at our school.”

SEVEN Mowat Park High School pupils were abducted while travelling home from school on Wednesday, 13 May
The pupils caught a taxi near South Coast and Blamey Road junction in Clairwood.

A man and a woman already in the taxi produced knives and threatened the girls. They demanded the girls hand over cell phones, money and other items. The taxi driver made a call and arranged to pick up other passengers from a taxi that had supposedly broken down. He then dropped the pupils in a cul-de-sac in Payne Road, Umbilo and fled. The school girls made their way to Umbilo SAPS where they contacted their parents.

Mowat Park High School principal, Nkosinathi Tsaulwayo is shocked at the incident. “We trust the public transport in the area. We never thought this could happen. This is the first time something like this has happened to pupils at our school,” he said.

Concerned parents called the school and even received calls from as far as the US and Australia. Tsaulwayo wants to assure parents that the incident did not happen at Mowat Park High School but in Clairwood.“I encourage parents to use lift clubs and make arrangements to drop their children off at school or organise transport for their children,” he said.

He added that pupils must travel in groups or use local transport that is close to Mowat Park High School. The seven pupils are receiving counselling at school.
