Honour Mandela’s legacy by giving blood

Make a difference throughout the year by donating blood regularly

WITH the philanthropic nature of Nelson Mandela Day in mind on Saturday, 18 July, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) hopes more people will be inspired to donate blood and save lives.

The SANBS hopes the spirit of the day will instil in blood donors a culture of making a difference throughout the year by donating blood regularly. The organisation collects over one-million units of blood annually, but often this is not enough to maintain the 3,000 units needed daily.

“I am always mindful of the gift of blood that circulates through my body. Without the blood and platelets I would be gone by now,” said Patience Thusi, a primary school teacher with aplastic anaemia.

Thusi gets regular blood transfusions because her bloodstream is compromised due to heavy bleeding.

“There is no better way to honour the life and spirit of a man who epitomised the precious value of life than to donate blood and save the lives of accident victims, mothers in labour, cancer patients and thousands others,” said SANBS national communications manager, Vanessa Raju.
