Dance project hosts fundraiser
There will be a vibrant programme with dancers showcasing hip hop and break dance routines
THE popular Dance Movement troupe will host a fundraising dance at Fairvale Secondary School hall on Friday, 24 July at 6.30pm.
The dance project is administered under the NPO WACO and aims to develop youth, specifically through arts and culture and to promote them, giving them the platform to expose their talents.
Over the past eight years, Dance Movement has achieved many successes including hosting annual dance productions and festivals in theatres, international travels to the UK and the US to represent South Africa at prestigious global dance events. It has also assisted in awarding some of its students’ bursaries to study at university.
“I’m so proud of all these dancers who have achieved their goals through Dance Movement, which has also taught them life values such as working hard and commitment. With the many challenges one faces in the arts industry, Dance Movement has provided the youth with the necessary skills to become professionals in the industry,” said dance director Jarryd Watson.
The fundraiser has a vibrant programme that kicks off with the dancers showcasing hip hop and break dance routines. There will also be prize giveaways, hampers and a dance evening for the audience to strut their moves on the dance floor.
One of the many success stories of the youth in the project is Shaun Bell (12) who joined the group in 2012. Since then, he has performed at the Playhouse Theatre and Catalina Theatre in musicals, dance festivals and dance productions. Last year at the Natal Dance Festival competition he came second with his junior dance group and this year was picked out of a 100 hopefuls to perform at the 14th Metro Music Awards and performed on stage with kwaito and hip hop rapper K.O.
“I was so nervous when they picked me to play as a mini K.O. in his performance act at the awards but once I met K.O. and the other celebrities like HHP and AKA they were so motivating and gave me the confidence to dance on stage in front of thousands of fans. I’m so happy to be a part of Dance Movement and thankful to Jarryd for all his effort and hard work to uplift the youth in our community.” said Shaun.
