Tow truck driver dies at accident scene

Paramedics were leaving the scene of a minor accident, when the second accident happened.

A BLUFF tow truck driver was killed when he was hit by a truck while attending to an accident on the M7 at about 9pm on Saturday, 25 July

Rescue Care operations director, Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were leaving the scene of a minor accident near Wakesleigh Road, after ensuring there were no injuries, when the second accident happened.

As the ambulance crew drove away they saw a truck smash into the accident scene and go down the embankment. The paramedics rushed to the aid of the tow truck driver, but his injuries were too severe and he was announced dead on the scene.

In a bizarre twist, the truck driver then allegedly stole the ambulance while the paramedics were distracted and raced away. Witnesses followed the ambulance, which the driver crashed into a restaurant at the corner of Umbilo Road and Deodar Avenue in Glenwood, where he was arrested.

“Rescue Care sends its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the man who lost his life while trying to assist others. In regards to the theft of the ambulance, we will be leaving all investigations up to the SAPS and assist them in whatever way they need to ensure the law takes its course,” said Jamieson.
