A GROUP of intrepid Bluff men are aiming to change the much maligned image of bikers by creating a safe haven for local children.
The Pinetown chapter of Mac’s Motorcycle Club, based on the Bluff is doing its utmost to make a lasting, positive impact on its community. Based at the Dutch Club, the bikers have fashioned a family friendly zone with the aim of providing a safe space for children and support to parents.
“What I am trying to achieve is a closer relationship between bikers and the community and I want to create an area of safety with no drugs or danger,” said the local Mac’s president, Riaan Groenewald.
The bikers began their campaign to help their suburb by raising funds for local children’s sanctuary, Isaiah 54, and by providing the children with a place to visit for some entertainment. They have also raised funds for Bluff families in need and plan to continue supporting where they can.
The Dutch Club base has undergone a revamp and will soon include a jungle gym for children to play on, along with the swing set already in residence. Future plans will see the area expand into a fully family friendly space with games and entertainment for parents and their little ones.
“My national president also started Mac’s 36 years ago so we are a staunch and powerful club in the biking community with a lot of influence. Thus I believe here in KZN we can only go forward, although we are going to stumble and make mistakes,” said Groenewald.
