AT least five people are needed to form a Bluff co-operative, which will provide volunteers with contract work.

“eThekwini municipality encourages the formation of co-operatives among the indigent

and the unemployed as a means of poverty alleviation. Such collectives may focus on any number of tasks from verge maintenance to waste collection, tree pruning and so on,” said ward 66 councillor, Duncan Du Bois.

The councillor enquired about the formation of such a co-operative with the Umbilo Parks and Gardens office, following a request by Bluff resident, David Healey.

“Applicants must be South African citizens. Once at least five have indicated their willingness to form a collective, a banking account has to be opened following which details of the members must be registered with the municipality’s business support structure. On completion of registration, the co-operative’s name is then entered on the municipality’s database.

Depending on the particular work potential of a co-operative, tasks are then contracted out by municipal departments. Some tasks such as the verge and kerb maintenance of Tara Road are ongoing, so the co-operative assigned there enjoys regular employment,” he said.

Du Bois urges to anyone interested in establishing a co-operative to contact David Healey on 076-385-8205.
