IN an ongoing campaign to bring a 24-hour clinic to Wentworth and to raise awareness on the prevalence of cancer in the area, the South Durban community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) and Mothers’ Prayer Group hosts a walk on Saturday, 10 October.
According to SDCEA, statistics show that cancer deaths are on the rise and they plan to raise awareness of this and to promote healthy lifestyles.
“South Durban is also known as ‘cancer valley’ due to the high levels of asthma and risk due to cancer. This is also due to the high levels of toxic emissions emanating from the petrochemical and chemical industries of South Durban,” said SDCEA environmental project officer for communications, energy and health, Noluthando Mbeje.
SDCEA is campaigning for a 24-hour clinic specifically for asthma and cancer sufferers as their research has shown the area has a higher than average number of people afflicted.
The walk will commence at 8.30am from the Badulla Road sports grounds. At a prescribed stopping point, a group of local pastors will pray and a statement will be handed over to Engen Refinery. The walkers will then head to the Highbury Road sports grounds where the walk will end.
