Armed robbers denied bail

FOUR armed robbers were denied bail on Monday, 4 April and charged with armed robbery thanks to the quick action of a robbery victim leading to the arrests last year.

The victim was walking along Quality Street when he was approached by five men, one of whom was carrying a firearm. the gunman pointed the gun at the man, demanding money. “The man said he had no cash and the suspect threatened him with the firearm,” Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Lt Mbuso Gumede. Not happy with his answer, the other three criminals searched him and found his cellphone, which they fled with into Highbury, sports grounds near Quality Street.

Officers patrolling the area were flagged down by the victim. Following the information he provided, they tracked down the four men and recovered the stolen phone. A vehicle was also seized which was used by the men.

They were arrested and charged for armed robbery. Members of the Durban flying squad K9 and Brighton Beach SAPS vispol were commended by management for the arrests and recovering stolen goods. “The community must be the eyes and ears and work with the police in order to fight crime,” added Lt Gumede.
