IMAGINE a world of heightened smell, taste, sound and texture but no sight.
That is what every day is like if you are blind.
The KZN Blind and Deaf Society invites everyone to share in this experience for just one evening at their ‘Dinner in the Dark’ which will be held at the Great Ilanga, Elangeni Hotel, on Saturday, 10 September. Guests will enjoy a sumptuous meal and a programme filled with music, entertainment and an unforgettable auditory experience.
It promises to be a grand affair, bringing together various corporates who want to experience something a little different. The format of the evening is a dinner and dance where guests will have the opportunity to enjoy part of their dinner in darkness, allowing them to use their remaining senses, heightened by the absence of sight. This situation, exceptional for the sighted, will encourage the guests to empathise with blindness and understand how difficult simple tasks like eating, cutting or simply conversing can be.
The event, conceptualised also to raise funds for the many projects administered and managed by the KZN Blind and Deaf Society, are a pre-cursor to blind awareness month in October, which aims to promote tolerance and acceptance for people with disabilities.
To support the ‘Dinner in the Dark’ event, purchase a table of 10 for R5,000 which includes a three course meal. For more information on the KZN Blind and Deaf Society or to purchase a table, call Shamila Surjoo on 031-309-4991 or 083-775-4991 or email director@bdskzn.org.za
