Two-year jail term for shoplifter

The woman had gone on an illicit shopping spree, lifting various clothing items from the stores.

A SHOPLIFTER was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on Tuesday, 30 August for a crime she committed last May.

Her undoing was secured when a vigilant informer’s knowledge was passed on to Constable Maxwell Mtolo, who reacted to a theft taking place on 14 May at Montclair Mall.

He quickly spotted a man who fitted a detailed description and confronted him. The 26-year-old was found with a packet filled with clothing items taken from three different shops. Const Maxwell also noticed a woman accompanying him, with a packet in her hand.

The woman was an employee in one of the stores. It was found she had gone on an illicit shopping spree, lifting various clothing items from the stores. She gave one of the bags to her accomplice to hold until she returned. They were both arrested and the docket was handed to Montclair detective, Constable Sifsi Shezi for investigation.

“He pieced together the information and meticulously investigated the case. During the trial at Wentworth court, Lindiwe Msibi Mthembu was found guilty of three counts of theft and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. The case against Xolani Ngcobo was withdrawn,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Cpt Dereck Vijiam.
