Schoolboys give back to Montclair community
The schoolboys donned their cooking hats and prepared tons of vegetables for the delicious meal they planned for God's Kitchen.
UDOBO and God’s Kitchen, which operate as part of Montclair Methodist Church, were visited by a group of grade 10 Westville Boys High pupils.
They came to interact with the children at Udobo for a few days, and cooked meals for the God’s Kitchen who serve the homeless and hungry.
From Monday, 5 September to Wednesday, 7 September the nine boys dedicated their time to play, read and sing to the Udobo children. They donned their cooking hats and prepared tons of vegetables for the delicious meal they planned for God’s Kitchen.
The initiative is part of their school community service which teaches the pupils about giving back and hopefully, sets the ball rolling for future civic service. Facilitator of God’s Kitchen, John Crocker was delighted to let the pupils into his kitchen. “It’s amazing what these teenagers are willing to do. It restores my faith, knowing that there are some good teens out there. We service a community that is not only lacking in nutritional needs but also spiritual. We are part of a wonderful church and I am honoured to share my work with the children and hopefully motivate them to continue giving back.

Udobo principal, Anne Sanders was excited to hear of the schoolboys’ intended visit. “It’s inspirational for me to see these young men take social responsibility. They have been wonderful with the children who love the attention and love they’re getting and it certainly adds some positivity into the school,” she said.
Westville schoolboy, James Brown said it made him happy to help. “It is very tiring but to see those little smiles on the children’s faces is so rewarding. I wish to continue to help more people in the future,” he said.
Food items were also collected by the school which were handed to God’s Kitchen’s facilitator.
