KZN MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda applauds Montclair police for the swift arrest of the five hijackers who opened fire on them on Tuesday, 20 September. He condemned the criminals for illegally endangering the officers’ lives.
When they were pursued by the police, the hijackers allegedly shot at the police who returned fire, injuring one of the five. Other suspects were arrested and will appear in Durban Magistrates Court soon, facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen vehicle.
Kaunda today applauded the police for placing their lives in danger to arrest the men.
“This is, indeed, an act of bravery in the process of securing property and life. We applaud the police for this work well done. We, however, wish to warn criminals that it is almost treason to attack the police on duty as they are the only shield to defend defenceless communities in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Equally, we urge communities to work closely with the police and ensure they enjoy their support and protection,” said Kaunda.
Kaunda also welcomed the arrest of six men in Umlazi yesterday who were found in possession of three unlicensed firearms and a suspected stolen vehicle.
“We note with appreciation the commitment of the police to work around the clock to ensure that criminals are put behind the bars. We are, in particular, concerned about the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province which are the key drivers of murder and robbery in our communities,” said Kaunda.
