UPDATE: Enviroserv says it opted to suspend leachate disposal via marine outfall
This is according to a statement issued by EnviroServ Group CEO, Dean Thompson.
EnviroServ has, of its own accord, temporarily suspended tankering effluent to the Southern Wastewater Treatment Works for disposal, until it can be assured of a consistency in standards.

“We informed eThekwini Water and Sanitation of our decision on 21 September after noting inconsistencies in samples. EnviroServ is still in possession of a valid discharge permit as issued by eThekweni Water and Sanitation.
With the accelerated tankering of leachate off site, the pre-treatment retention time on site was reduced, resulting in inconsistent leachate qualities.
We will now focus on additional pre-treatment of leachate to the required standard by treating in a dedicated tank on site and only upon receiving compliant analysis, will this effluent be tankered to Southern Waste Treatment Works. We remain on track to meet our 11 point action plan as agreed with by the Department of Environmental Affairs,” read the statement.
Thompson’s statement was sent to the Sun following a statement made by the Department of Environmental Affairs’ oceans and coastal division representative, Nitasha Baijnath-Pillay at a meeting with the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance and groundwork on Thursday night, 22 September.
Baijnath-Pillay told the meeting that the department had halted the disposal of Enviroserv’s leachate via the Southern Water Treatment Works.
