The latest drug bust at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, 11 November uncovered cocaine valued at more than R500,000 stashed in the hollowed-out pages of a consignment of books.
South African Revenue Services (SARS) Commissioner, Tom Moyane, praised the vigilance of his department’s Customs Detector Dog Unit when the ingeniously concealed cocaine stash was discovered inside books at the airport.
Customs officials’ suspicions became aroused when they intercepted a shipment en route from South Africa to India during a routine inspection. They found the books to be unusually heavy and on further examination, discovered the pages had been hollowed out. The hollows had been stuffed with cocaine valued at R575,400.
A drug testing kit they administered reacted positive for the drug, which weighed 2kg. The consignment was handed to the South African Police Services for further investigation.
