Bluff gymnast tops in Zim competition
Kiera is a hard worker and she just enjoys what she does.
YOUNG, talented and determined 12-year-old Bluffite, Kiera Rowland is taking the gymnastics world by storm and shows no signs of stopping.
For five years, Kiera has displayed great talent in the art of gymnastics and ballet, winning almost every competition she entered in KZN. Her latest achievement was placing first in the 2016 region 5 competition, an international competition which was held in Zimbabwe from 7 to 11 December.
Although it was a long and tiring adventure, the 12-year-old was overwhelmed with excitement when she was announced the rhythmic gymnastics junior division winner.
“I was nervous but thanks to the support of my parents and coaches, I had someone to talk to about my feelings and they helped calm me down. I was happy to win in my division. It just shows I can do anything if I work hard at it,” she said proudly.
Mother, Bronwyn Rowland, couldn’t be any prouder of her daughter. She is the eldest of two children and she has a clear influence on her younger sister, who is also into gymnastics. I’m so proud of what they have achieved. Kiera is a hard worker and she just enjoys what she does. Sometimes I am surprised by what she can do and watching her grow into this mature young lady is lovely,” she said.
The St Henry’s Marist College grade 7 pupil’s hard work pays off as she still maintains good grades while dedicating two to three hours a day to training.
Kiera has big dreams for the future and like her gymnastics hero, Olymic champion Margarita Mamun, she one day hopes to be on the world stage, competing against the world’s greatest. “I would also love to compete in the Commonwealth Games,” she added.
Besides gymnastics and ballet, the 12-year-old enjoys playing netball and hockey. She encourages young girls to keep working hard and to never give up.
