USELESS, trivial or haughty, this week’s #SLSWednesdayWord is a great descriptive word.
Trumpery describes something that looks good but has little or no use – something attractive but valueless. It has been used by the bard himself, William Shakespeare, to describe worthless finery.
It is derived from a French word for deceiving and was popular in the mid-1400s.
While it faded from common use, trumpery has seen a resurgence of popularity since 2015, coinciding with the political aspirations of soon-to-be American president, Donald Trump.
In fact #Trumpery has been trending on Twitter recently… One wonders why.
A reminder. #Trumpery is in the dictionary. Not that he would know. pic.twitter.com/LqswzTyQfn
