Scenic Stainbank Cup 15km marks 45th running

Yellowwood Park Sports Club encourages the community to get involved whether as a runner, supporter or volunteer.

THIS year’s BMG Stainbank Cup, organised and hosted by Yellowwood Park Athletics Club, will be extra special because it will be celebrating its 45th year since its inception in 1973.
The race founded by Dickie Deacon, George Taylor and Ray Beythien is said to be the longest running 15km race and one of the most beautiful, as runners have the opportunity to run through part of Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, Yellowwood Park’s historical gem.

The race takes place on Sunday, 2 December from Yellowwood Park Sports Club. The runners will trail through Yellowwood Park, Stainbank and back to the club.
“This year will be special, as we remember the founding members and honour them by completing the race. I think what attracts runners is the standard of racing we have displayed over the years. With the incorporation of the nature reserve, it is a relaxing and visually pleasing race. I believe this race has consistently been the best-organised race,” said race organiser Fred Schoon.

Running has proven health and anti-stress benefits.

“Regardless of what fitness level you are at, running allows you to push yourself to your own personal best. It is one of the few sports where you get to race against the greats and still be an average runner. It is also a great opportunity to meet new people and be part of a lifetime family,” he added.
Yellowwood Park Sports Club encourages the community to get involved whether as a runner, supporter or volunteer. “We welcome anyone to be part of our club, especially the youth. We believe it can benefit the youngsters in the long run. We are just one big family which is looking to expand,” said athletic club chairman, Steve Conway.
The community should be aware that the race will start at 6am and motorists are asked to be tolerant of the traffic implications. “We urge them to instead come out and support our runners, even volunteer as a marshall,” added Conway.
For more information on the race or to volunteer contact Fred Schoon on 083-384-4053.
