Parents often despair at the potential exposure of their children to all kinds of unwanted content on the internet and through social media in this digital age.
Well, despair no longer as today (Tuesday, 5 February 2019) is Safer Internet Day (SID).
From cyberbullying to social networking, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current concerns. The aim is not only to help parents but also children and teens to familiarise themselves with digital-related concerns and solutions.
The campaign’s slogan, ‘Together for a better internet’ is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together and play a part in creating a better internet for everyone, especially for younger users. Starting out in 2004 as an initiative of the European Union SafeBorders project, over the years it has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar and its prevalence has spread to some 140 countries.
While South Africa has no activities listed on the SID website, parents across the world can benefit from the plethora of resources available at https://www.saferinternetday.org/
The site has a wealth of multilingual resources to empower young people, their teachers and families to make the best possible use of online technology. It also hosts links to Just one of the links worth clicking on from the SID webpage is the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) portal.
