Storm-hit informal settlements get R47m sanitation boost
The allocation of funds forms part of the municipality’s ongoing response to the impact of severe weather events.
ETHEKWINI council has approved the transfer of R47.8m in disaster grant funding to special projects to implement approved interventions aimed at repairing sanitation infrastructure damaged by the 2025 storms in informal settlements across affected areas.
The decision was taken at a full council meeting on September 1.

“The funding will support the implementation of targeted interventions to restore and improve sanitation infrastructure in communities impacted by the storms,” said eThekwini Municipality in a statement.
The allocation forms part of the municipality’s ongoing response to the impact of severe weather events and its commitment to restoring essential services and improving sanitation conditions in affected informal settlements.
eThekwini Municipality records 99.99% billing completeness as rating base grows
The City has recorded a billing completeness rate of 99.99% for the month ended July 31.
According to the municipality, billing completeness is one of the key performance indicators within revenue management, as it measures the proportion of eligible municipal accounts that are successfully billed each month.
“Effective billing is critical to ensuring that the municipality generates the revenue required to sustain and improve service delivery,” said eThekwini in a statement.

As at July 31, the municipality billed 929 702 of 929 776 eligible accounts, achieving a billing completeness rate of 99.99%.
According to the report, only 74 accounts were not billed during the July cycle.
“The 74 accounts relate primarily to newly created accounts that were not yet eligible for billing during the July billing cycle. These accounts have been scheduled for inclusion in the August 2026 billing run. The high billing completeness rate demonstrates the municipality’s continued focus on strengthening revenue management systems and ensuring that eligible accounts are accurately and consistently billed,” eThekwini said.
