Young and old are encouraged to be a part of the first of its kind fun-filled day which will see people embark on a walk and run from YWP Sports Club into and around the Stainbank Nature Reserve and end back at the club. This will be followed by the YWP fair with various local business stalls, food stalls, raffle competitions, a beer tent as well as some games and fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Steve Conway of YWP Sports Club said that the response from the community has been positive and anticipates about 200 to 300 runners on the day. “There will also a cheque of R6 000 that will be handed over to HACT and a draw will be made for one of the YWP Sports Club runners who will compete in the Comrades Marathon, which will go towards a charity of their choice and further upgrade their seeding at the marathon. All in all it’s a good cause and a good day,” explained Steve.
The initiative comes after members of the club realised that the YWP Conservancy was experiencing a lack of funds towards their various projects in the Yellowwood Park area such as removing alien vegetation, reforesting areas, as well as river cleanup projects. “We are also very involved with the Junior Conservancy at Yellowwood Park Primary School and collaborate with them to help educate the youth on their environment. Our latest project with the school was educating the young learners on how to make eco-bricks and their significance for the environment,” said Angeline Hand-Burton of YWP Conservancy.

The other beneficiary of the local fundraising initiative is HACT, which is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling the HIV/ Aids pandemic through holistic, multifaceted and sustainable interventions including prevention, care, community empowerment and community outreach. HACT CEO Candace Davidson said, “We have patients from all over Durban, including South Durban and greatly appreciate being considered in this fundraiser as we are a non-profit organisation. Our fundraising manager met with Steven and a few other members of YWP Sports Club at a run and it’s amazing example of how people and organisations can connect and work together for a greater purpose.”
All proceeds from the run and walk, at R50 per person, will go towards the YWP Conservancy and HACT charities. Anyone wanting to wanting to book a stall at the fair, can email flamingogrove@telkmosa.net.
