Promotion and development bowls take off at Wentworth Bowling Club

Members are also reminded that competitions have been posted for Saturday, 12 October, and that the annual Wentworth vs Bluff challenge will take place on Sunday, 13 October

At Wentworth Bowling Club (WBC), as at any lawn bowls club, facing the spiraling cost of green maintenance, represents a financial problem that requires continual fund raising and support from sponsors.

Old, worn bowling mats present a two-fold problem because they slip when the bowl is delivered, causing damage to the green and possible injury to the bowler delivering the bowl. Wentworth club member, Brian Smith, approached local hardware and tooling supplier EIS to discuss the sponsorship of new mats to alleviate these problems and allow the club to retain the money they would have outlaid for essential green upkeep.

The committee and members thank Natasja van Wyk (marketing) and Calvin da Silva, the EIS manager, for their generous donation of 24 brand new rubber mats that have made a significant difference to the enjoyment of bowls at WBC by its members and visitors.

Wednesday’s promotion and development bowls saw Wayne Booysen, Mike Rehman and Des Hardman take home the prize money for top spot after the afternoon’s play. This opportunity for the community to try their hand at the game of lawn bowls starts at 2.30pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Bowlers need to register to play by 2pm. Participants are reminded that bowls are available and that they should wear flat shoes.

Members are also reminded that competitions have been posted for Saturday, 12 October, and that the annual Wentworth vs Bluff challenge will take place on Sunday, 13 October. Good bowling wishes go to Maree Sadie and Eileen du Plessis who are participating in the Port Natal Bowls singles championship on Saturday, 12 October.

Get well wishes are extended to Dirk Venter.
