Quins thrash opponents at first warm-up games for season

The most successful bowler for the home team was part time right arm orthodox slow bowler, Momedtalha Motlalha, who captured 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs.

TWO of Harlequins Cricket Club’s teams had unofficial warm up matches on Sunday, 5 January.

The fourth team had a successful match against Durban Cricket Club at Highbury Sports Grounds and a combined first and second team had a 40 over match against AK Hardware from Jozini.

Quins batted first on a curing wicket on a slow outfield at Harlequins at 11am. Opening batsman, Aziz Khan, top scored for Quins with 52 runs, middle order batsmen Tyler Jordan scored 36 runs and Mohamed Patel was back to his usual aggressive form with 36 runs in an undefeated innings comprising some dynamic strikes over the clubhouse at mid-wicket as well as some powerful straight drives.

Ball velocity over the wicket surface was initially slow during the initial portion of Quins innings making batting difficult for Quins who managed 218 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 40 over allocation. The opposition bowling was relatively weak and the score should have advanced beyond a mere 218 runs.

In contrast, AK Hardware’s batting was splendid with two of their batsman compiling noteworthy innings, the consequence of which allowed them to advance beyond Quins’ target, losing just 6 wickets in 32 overs. Quins lost by four wickets.

The most successful bowler for the home team was part time right arm orthodox slow bowler, Momedtalha Motlalha, who captured 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs.

Medium paced seam bowler Faiyas Safri captured 2 wickets for 50 runs in 8 overs and quick bowler Kevin Kettle captured a single wicket for 24 runs in 5 overs and also executed a run out.

AK Hardware had the easier wicket to bat on as the prevailing hot sunny weather had removed significant moisture from the wicket by the time they batted. They are also twenty over specialists.

The second half of the season commences this weekend with Quins U13 team taking on Hillary Malvern in a 30 over a side youth league match at Harlequins from 8.30am on Sunday.

The first team plays a 50 over promotion league match at Chatsworth 114 and the second team plays DUT at Harlequins 1 from 1pm in a 40 over a side division 2 match up.

All seven teams will have league matches on Saturday, 18 and Sunday, 19 January. Contact 073-795-0363 for more club information.
