Be on high alert as criminals prowl

Always be alert. If you are a pedestrian, make sure you don't carry valuables unnecessarily.

IN excess of crimes in the Montclair policing precinct, residents are reminded to always be cautious and on high alert as criminals continue to prey on victims. The following safety tips were compiled by Captain Derek Vijiam of Montclair SAPS.

Residential Security
Secure your doors, windows, and gates. Light up your landscape. Set up and activate a security system.

Personal Security
Always be alert. If you are a pedestrian, make sure you don’t carry valuables unnecessarily. Walk with confidence and purpose. Generally, keep hands free if possible. Be aware of your surroundings and always scan the area around you. Be prepared to request for help if necessary.

Motorist
When driving on quiet roads, always be careful about which lane you travel. Avoid unfamiliar roads. Be vigilant of your environment and know where high-risk areas are. Lower the volume of your music thus eliminating distraction. Ensure you are not being followed. Always try to travel on different routes. Do not stop for anybody who indicate they may need help in deserted roads. Always lock your vehicle doors. Should you notice any suspicious people wandering around make use of your hooter to draw attention or drive off in lonely and desolate areas and limit travel in these areas.
