Foundation funds bursaries for Wentworth youth
The family of the late Apostle Victor Glenn Smith is continuing his efforts of goodwill in Wentworth.
EDUCATION is the key component to the alleviation of poverty and as such, a Wentworth-based foundation is paying it forward with its efforts to uplift the community.
Five learners, who excelled in their matric exams last year, were awarded the tools that would help them in their respective fields of study on Friday, 7 February, courtesy of the Apostle Victor Glenn Smith Foundation.
These learners were sourced from the pool of high schools in the area which were Fairvale, Umbilo and Merebank Secondaries, and the fifth recipient being a postgraduate student from the Durban University of Technology, who was funded for his Bachelor of Technology degree.
The family of the late popular Wentworth apostle started the foundation in his honour for his efforts in encouraging locals to embrace education as a means of empowerment and social ills deterrent.
“He would often say to parents that children must start off from their shoulders, to set them up so they don’t start where they started by giving them the opportunities that they never had.”
“As a family, we invested finances to assist parents who cannot give their children those opportunities. It is our way of saying that education will always be something to pull children from the mindset of not having opportunities. They will never be limited in those opportunities,” said the late apostle’s daughter, Michelle Smith.
She added that her parents, who never had the opportunities to further themselves, had been at the forefront of initiatives as such since 1996 but the foundation was formally founded in May last year.
She said they hope to grow the foundation in the years to come to farther their reach to the community. Their mission for this foundation includes sustainable community development efforts in education, humanitarian services, social justice, and healthcare assistance.
“Even though he is not here, his voice and legacy will still speak for generations through the people and children that we invest in and his words of education starting from the shoulders, this foundation will be their shoulders that they will start from,” she said.
