Wentworth comedian in the spotlight

WHENEVER local comedian Daryl Williams hits the stage, the audience can be rest assured they’re in for some tear-jerking laughs and thought-provoking entertainment.
The 32-year-old was born and raised in Newlands before moving and settling in Wentworth. “I always felt like a stranger in Wentworth as I didn’t really grow up here. I would often try to get myself out there by getting involved in different activities in the community,” said Daryl who shared that he was also quite the introvert who was bullied in his younger years.
“I’ve lived quite an eventful life that I believe was preparing me for my destiny of becoming a comedian. From my colourful childhood, being in crazy situations such as being stung by a swarm of bees, to being attacked by Indian Mynas. I would ask myself ‘why me?’ but its such life events that have given me some of the best material,” he said comically.
His interest in comedy began after spending hours watching comedy shows of famous comedians on DVD before one day a friend of his posted on Facebook about a comedy show scouting for upcoming comedians. “I asked to be part of the project and with no real practice I went up on stage for the first and gave stand-up comedy my best shot. It was a surreal moment and that was when I realised what I want to do for the rest of my life. Myself and another fellow first-time comedian won the crowd and completely shut that place down. It was amazing.”
“Comedy is my passion, my life, my everything. Every single day I work at perfecting my craft. Personally, I don’t think I’m funny but clearly I must be doing something right when I hit the stage. For me, comedy is all about observation of the everyday things whether it be in politics or relationships. I also do research on the crowd I’ll be performing for. It’s not just about telling a joke,” he said.
The father of two shared that his daughter, son and wife are his biggest supporters and his son is the inspiration behind most of his material. Daryl hosts the local comedy show So You Smaak You Got Jokes which is held at Leslie’s Corner on the Bluff every Sunday evening. The show is in its second season and serves as a platform for raw and upcoming comedy talent to showcase their skills and stand the chance to win R10 000.
“We have a lot of talented people in the community but many of them are too scared or not motivated to put themselves out there. Durban is the only city in South Africa that doesn’t have a comedy club and we’re hoping that through projects like this show, that we can change that. We want new people to enter the comedy scene. During the show we also include other talent such as singers and poets to also get them some exposure,” said Daryl.
Cassandra Garofallou, Daryl’s manager said that the aim is to grow the comedy scene especially for undiscovered talent. There is no charge fee for the contenders who perform in front of an audience. There is still space available for entries for local talent to make the most of this thrilling opportunity.
