Adverse morning conditions attribute to Quins’ loss
The opposition played a superior game deserving of the victory, despite having by far the best of the prevailing conditions.
ALL official lower league cricket matches were canceled as a consequence of intermittent rain which occurred during the period of Thursday to Saturday morning.
However, on the first day of the new autumn season, the second side and the fourth team played out unofficial matches against competent opposition.
The fourth team’s seam bowler, Terrence Hook, claimed a hat trick of wickets. The first team took on Hillary Malvern in a 50-over match which commenced 90 minutes late due to a damp pitch surface. Quins batted first.
Their top order were unable to execute any successful attacking strokes and even the defensive shots were dire on a wicket surface on which deliveries initially had some adherence to the surface combined with surprisingly sharp lift, resulting in the majority of straight shots going aloft to fielders forward of the stumps.
Only three middle-order batsmen managed to acquire double figures through Brandon de Mellion who top-scored for Quins with a well-grafted innings comprising 17 runs, Aziz Khan seemed to get accustomed to the nature of the pitch with 14 runs, but was, unfortunately, run out and Kevin Kettle struck a dozen runs. Quins were dismissed for just 67 runs in 40 overs.
Hillary Malvern’s response in the afternoon session was clinically effective on the easing surface. Ryan Vaughn struck a quarter of a century and Garth Chislett survived a vociferous caught behind appeal from the entire Quins team to end up undefeated with 26 runs, to take Malvern through to an easy victory by seven wickets.
Best of Quin’s bowlers was medium paced seamer Faiyaz Safri who never captured a wicket but delivered admirably conceding just 7 runs in five overs.
The opposition played a superior game deserving of the victory, despite having by far the best of the prevailing conditions. Quins’ loss in this match should primarily be attributed to the adverse conditions in the morning period.
All Harlequins cricket teams have league matches next weekend aside from the U13 side.
The firsts and fifths are at home. The club hosts its sixers extravaganza and awards function during the first weekend of April.
