New soccer academy aims to develop young talent

"My vision is to enhance the level of skill in local soccer players. I really want to put Bluff on the map as a soccer powerhouse," - soccer coach Sage Maujean.

BLUFF’s Sage Maujean is on a mission to use his passion for soccer to elevate the standard of the sport in the community.

Having lived in the area all his life, Sage said that he always felt that the Bluff area lacked an elite soccer academy where boys and girls could develop their skills and then take it back to their soccer clubs or school soccer teams. Through this realisation, his brainchild, Harlequins Vision Football Academy, was born. “My vision is to enhance the level of skill in local soccer players. I really want to put Bluff on the map as a soccer powerhouse. We are currently looking for any sponsors to help us get this going, for now we have a partnership with Harlequins Sports Club which has allowed us to their grounds,” he said.

Sage currently runs a sporting extra mural company called Vision Sport, where he offers children all the main sporting codes at various crèches and pre-schools on the Bluff and Durban.

“I’ve always played soccer socially with family and friends. I’ve also played in indoor soccer leagues throughout my life. To say I’m passionate about soccer is an understatement. I’m obsessed. I’m currently a South African Football Association (SAFA) licensed coach and plan to keep going until I reach a professional level licence,” he said.

“Any determined player wants to reach a high level, it is a no brainer. We have links to scouts, and people in the industry that can help players get one foot in the door when it comes to professional teams. The academy will be the hub of soccer development,” he added.
