Seasoned soccer coach implements ‘fun’damentals on soccer field
Having realised a gap in the sporting community in his hometown, Jeremy was inspired to start his own soccer school which is aimed at bringing back the element of fun to the game.
WHETHER its encouraging his players or reflecting on his eventful past, Jeremy Oliver’s love for the game is both inspiring and innovative in his community.
Born and bred in both the Bluff and Wentworth areas, Jeremy, 38, has been kicking the soccer ball for as long as he can remember. He has South African Football Association (SAFA) and Scottish FA qualifications, he is also a qualified fitness trainer and an advanced personal trainer with a certificate in nutrition. “I went overseas as a 20-year-old with dreams to make it as a professional. I didn’t know how exactly I was going to do it, but my passion and determination led me,” he said, recounting his days as a promising junior player.
He has worked in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a soccer coach, fitness trainer and personal trainer. The soccer enthusiast has also coached at schools, soccer schools and academies. Jeremy has played competitive football in South Africa, the United Kingdom (UK) and the UAE. Locally he has played for Harlequins, Cherrians FC, Fynnlands and Bayview soccer clubs.
Having realised a gap in the sporting community in his hometown, Jeremy was inspired to start his own soccer school, The ‘Fun’damentals, in March 2019, which essentially is about bringing back the element of fun to the game in a predominantly competitive age. Today, fielding girls and boys teams, the school is becoming a key player in the community, preparing and developing them to join local clubs.
“We currently host all our sessions at Harlequins Sports Club astro turf pitch. We have steadily grown to about 80 children registered. We accept all ages of all abilities, male and female. Our sessions are fun based but at the same time informative. We teach children the basic skills needed in order to become a better player. We do group and one on one sessions. We are not a club or an academy and are non-competitive. We do not play in tournaments or leagues. Most of our players play for clubs or at least for their school soccer team. We actually encourage our players to play for their schools and clubs. Our goal is to help develop players, so they can perform better for their schools and clubs,” said Jeremy who has made it his personal mission to be the sporting mentor that he needed as a youngster.
The Fundamentals also helps with trials and football scholarships for schools, colleges and universities, locally and abroad. The scholarships are for both male and females. To register a children or for more information contact Jeremy Oliver on 062-462-3121 or email jeremy@thefundamentals.co.za.
