#WildlifeDay: Learners make an environmental impact

Grosvenor Boys' High School Grade 8 learners were tasked with picking up litter around the Bluff National Golf Course on Moss Road.

LEARNERS at Grosvenor Boys’ High School made their environmental impact on Friday morning, 6 March, during World Wildlife Day, which is globally observed on 3 March.

The Grade 8 learners were tasked with picking up litter around the Bluff National Golf Course on Moss Road.

In addition to the cleanup, no dumping signs were put up around the area to emphasise the point that while there is a bush enclosing the golf course, dumping is still not permitted.

According to ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo, the cleanups are set to be done in two-month intervals and hopes to rope in more people and stakeholders.

Teacher at Grosvenor Boys, Tarryn Potgeiter, said they were happy to lend a hand for the greater good of the community as a school.

“Our school uses any kind of exposure to show that we take our environment seriously such as participating in the cleaning up of the golf course which is a green line on the Bluff. We’re a big school in the community and we will always help wherever we can,” she said.

Preston Chetty of DSW education said the clean up was to create awareness around the importance of a clean and healthy environment.

“It is also the importance of wetlands and how to preserve them, especially since the loss of biodiversity in our wetlands is becoming a major issue which stems from litter,” he said.

Prinsloo said the clean up would extend to residents monitoring the area for illegal dumping through a WhatsApp group. To be added on the group, send a text message to the councillor on 083 406 2525.

“As part of the initiative, we partnered with Grosvenor Boys’ High School to look after and conduct a massive clean up on Moss Road specifically focused around the Bluff National Golf Course because of all the wildlife that utilises the environment, our monkeys and birds. We thought it’s quite important to partner with the school for these initiatives and World Wildlife Day is one of the many other days that we will be celebrating as part of our environmental calendar for 2020 as the ward,” he said.
