Police issue stern warning to motorists
Motorists have been urged to ensure their vehicles are locked properly after activating their alarm system.
POLICE in Wentworth have issued a stern warning to motorists following an increase in car theft. Merebank Ridge and Merebank Central were the most affected areas during this spike in car theft during the month of February in the Wentworth policing precinct.
“Vehicles were mostly stolen between 2pm and 6pm and some during early parts of the morning. Vehicles taken were Hyundai bakkies and Kia bakkies of which two were stolen from a parking area.
“A Ford Ranger and Toyota bakkie were also stolen. Owners with these kinds of vehicles are sensitised and urged to park in secured places and to ensure that alarm systems are activated,” said captain Mbuso Gumede of Wentworth police.
He said some of the vehicles are not fitted with anti-theft devices which makes it difficult to find while the ones fitted with tracking devices are normally recovered and returned to their owners.
“Owners are urged to safeguard their vehicles and not park in isolated places where there are no street lights.”
“Police have stepped up patrols in these areas during the day and night to ensure that areas are safe and theft of motor vehicles is not increasing. It is important to ensure before you leave your vehicle that it is properly locked by using the door handles after activating your alarm system,” advised captain Gumede.
He further noted that a physical check after locking a car is still necessary as remote jamming is still a reality. To report suspicious vehicles or people loitering around a car park, call CrimeStop on 086-001-0111 or the Wentworth police on 031-451-6240/6241/6242.
