Man sentenced for Wentworth robberies

The suspect was sentenced to an effective 6 years imprisonment and was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.

A robbery suspect was sentenced to six years imprisonment for theft and robbery at the Durban Regional Court on 28 February.

The accused committed the first theft and robbery in the Wentworth area in 2013, where he stole a cellphone from the complainant and was arrested, charged and appeared in court before being released on bail.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, the accused skipped bail and could not be traced at the time. “A warrant for his arrest was issued by the court five years later and he was arrested. He re-appeared and went on another robbery spree and in the month of May and July he had robbed two more complaints of their cellphones. The accused was then traced through the informer network of Detective Warrant Officer Walter Marais, and was arrested,” he said.

All three case dockets were combined and the accused appeared in court where he was found guilty on all three counts, one on theft and two counts of robbery he committed between 2013 and 2018. He was sentenced to an effective 6 years imprisonment and was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.

“Detective W/O  Marais was commended by the station management for his good work in ensuring that the accused was apprehended and brought before court and prosecuted for preying on innocent community members by robbing them. This will send a strong message to criminals who torment innocent residents in the Merewent area,” said Gumede.

Report crime to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
