Health minister only person authorised to confirm coronavirus cases

The provincial spokesperson for the Department of Health said that only one person in the country has the authority to confirm new coronavirus cases.

THE Department of Health has issued a statement urging residents to verify news sources.

This follows the circulation of a post on Facebook by a resident who claimed that the first coronavirus in the south Durban area was confirmed.

According to the poster, this information was verified by the chairperson of Wentworth Hospital who, according to the resident, stated the patient was then sent to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

“Good afternoon everyone, I have contacted Wentworth Hospital and have spoken to the deputy chairperson. He has confirmed that one person had the virus. The person has been sent to Greys Hospital in PMB yesterday. The hospital was sterilised this morning. He will update me on any further developments,” the post reads.

The provincial spokesperson for the Department of Health said that only one person in the country has the authority to confirm new coronavirus cases.

“The MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu wishes to reiterate that the only person who can publicly confirm and declare positive cases of Covid-19 is the Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize,” said Noluthando Nkosi.
