YWPPS majorette makes SA team
Alice Bakah will compete on the Majorette World Federation global stage in Asia in September.
YELLOWWOOD Park Primary School (YWPPS) drum majorette, Alice Bakah recently received a double bill of good news when she was awarded her South African (SA) colours for drummies and selected for the SA team where she will go on to proudly represent her country.
“This is a dream come true,” said the proud majorette upon receiving the good news of making the national team which will compete on the Majorette World Federation global stage in Asia in September. “I was so surprised to find out that I had received SA colours and the national team because I am still considered a new girl. My parents are very happy for me I am very grateful and excited for this achievement.”

The 12 year old started drummies in Grade 3. “This sport has opened so many opportunities for me such as participating in different competitions, travelling, meeting new like-minded people and growing and improving as it is a disciplined sport. I am a competitive person and love drummies for its competitive aspect and for fun,” she said. She is now faced with the task to raise R30 000 to cover the costs of flights, accommodation, kit and meals to compete in Asia. “I get a lot of support from my family and friends. They also push me to do my best. My mom, dad and sister are trying their best to help raise funds,” said a hopeful Alice who is also the school’s head girl.
The team’s coach, Cate D’Offay said that preparing the girls for competitions requires a lot of time, dedication and discipline. She commended Alice on her impressive achievements. “This sport teaches girls a lot of respect and time management. These are not just values that help them in the sport but these are things that they can apply in life. We are so proud of Alice as coaches and she is a great example of how far all the girls can go. We knew she could do it and its so amazing to actually see it happen. We’re hoping that she can secure sponsorship because it will play a big part in helping her realise her dream to represent SA.”

The YWPPS drummies team currently holds the KZN champion of champions title and made top three at nationals, securing a spot in the president category last year. The team will be competing for a spot in the elite category this year. They are already in full swing with local competitions and came first in Pom/Non Prop, Baton, Mace categories as well as second for small drill and third place for large drill last weekend at the SAMCA competition held in Umbilo on Saturday, 14 March.
