Residents still benefit from centre’s feeding amid coronavirus concerns
Even in the time of the widespread coronavirus, where other soup kitchens have since closed, the centre, which works closely with the police branch in the community, still opened its gates to feed the community.
TWO large pots filled to the brim with delicious chicken akhipa (savoury rice) to feed the Wentworth community were the order of the day.
In celebrating and observing a Muslim holy day, residents were treated to an extra day of feeding, on Monday, 23 March, where normally, the kitchen is opened every Tuesday and Thursday at the Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre.
Even in the time of the widespread coronavirus, where other soup kitchens have since closed, the centre, which works closely with the police branch in the community, still opened its gates to feed the community.
Wentworth police station commander, Col Willem van Zyl was also there to hand out the scrumptious lunch and took caution to not shake hands but use the elbow greeting as prescribed by the presidency.
Const Hassan Khan, who is the primary fundraiser of the feeding scheme and backed up by sponsors said their target was to feed at least 200 people in the memory of all the prophets in the Islamic faith.
“In the token of this auspicious charitable month of March, we as the Victim Friendly Centre, for the past four years have been serving and assisting the community of Wentworth and its surrounding areas and with the help of some of our sponsors continue serving the community.”
“We have our hands full to serve the community on all aspects including counselling, HIV testing and assisting the community in all aspects where we are able to. We also form part of the Saps and help where ever we can. This auspicious day ties in with manager at the centre, Jenny Gomes’ birthday, and she is also hands-on with the feeding,” he said.
