Covid-19 claims the life of Bluff granny (81)

Driene Dorrington was on a ventilator from 22 March, until Wednesday afternoon, 1 April. She was cremated on Friday, 3 April.

THE van Loggerenberg family is mourning the loss of their beloved mother and grandmother, Driene Dorrington, 81, who lost her life to Covid-19 at Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital on Thursday, 2 April.

According to daughter-in-law, Christina van Loggerenberg, Driene, who had been living at the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged, had initially suffered a mild-stroke on 9 March and was hospitalised at the said hospital on 16 March. “She was then discharged and admitted to the home’s step-down facility. Our last visit at the home was on 21 March. I noticed that she seemed quite down and depressed, she didn’t look well at all. She was only there for four days when she got sick again. We received a call from the home later that night that she was being sent back to St Augustine’s Hospital,” she said, adding that the family was not allowed to see her after medical tests revealed that Driene had tested positive for Covid-19.

She had been in ICU, on a ventilator from 22 March, until Wednesday afternoon, 1 April. She was cremated on Friday, 3 April.

“Driene was not just my mother-in-law, she was my friend and my mother. We were friends through thick and thin. A person’s mom is always special, I lost my own parents when I was younger. Now it feels like I have lost my mother all over again.”

The late granny had three sons and five grandchildren. She lived on the Bluff for more than 50 years and was a long-standing member of the Bluff Methodist Church. “We have suffered a great loss but are grateful for all the heartfelt messages and support from our loved ones during this difficult time,” said Christina.
