16 arrested for flouting lockdown rules
The suspects were detained in custody and appeared in Wentworth court on Tuesday morning, 7 April.
SIXTEEN Merewent locals were arrested for violating lockdown regulations yesterday (Monday, 6 April).
Metro police conducted law enforcement operations in Merewent according to the Disaster Management Act, checking for permits and investigating pedestrians walking aimlessly on the roads. Among those arrested were 13 men and three women, for failing to remain in their homes during the Covid-19 lockdown, as advised by the President.
The suspects were detained in custody and appeared in Wentworth court on Tuesday morning, 7 April.
“The police have been patrolling the area urging community to stay indoors during this lockdown, but some are not complying. Local tuckshops were also visited to check whether the owners were in compliance or not. Some tuckshops have been charged for selling cigarettes and other items which they not supposed to. Parents are urged to monitor their children during this lockdown as children have frequently been seen playing outside on the roads and are therefore at risk of contracting the virus.
“We have found that some people are still taking this lockdown for granted, failing to understand that it is for their own protection and health. The police will continue with the duties and enforce the law on those who are not in compliance. The police are not harassing anyone but are adhering to the President’s call and performing legal duties to ensure the safety of our community,” said Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede.
