Passionate coach enjoys challenges of cricket

Clint Abrahams has also passed on his life-long love of the game to his three sons, Luwellin who plays U19 at district level, Caleb who is preparing for KZN U11 and Calcol.

THERE’S a lot that draws local cricket coach, Clint Abrahams, to the sport.

“It’s a gentleman’s game and there’s always a new challenge,” he said.

Being introduced to the game by his father at an early age, his love for cricket has been a love affair of 21 years and an undying passion to this very day.

He’s also passed on his life-long love of the game to his three sons, Luwellin who plays U19 at district level, Caleb who is preparing for KZN U11 and Calcol.

Clint coaches a mini team and the U13 and manages the open division 3 at Harlequins Cricket Club. He also coaches an open team called the Scorchers and a Total Community United Cricket Academy team for juniors who were all going to play at KZN Big Bash in Pinetown before the lockodwn.

“Being a coach is the highest achievement of my career in cricket as well as getting the opportunity to inspire others. I hope to see them rise beyond all goals my teams set for themselves,” he said adding that the game keeps many of his players off the streets and out of trouble.

He said he is motivated by his role of being able to instill values and confidence in his player as some of them come from backgrounds of hardship.

His highlights as a coach include winning the Durban District’s Cricket Union (DDCU) cricket league 2018/19 season and witnessing five of his players attend the KZN trials. “I recorded the most wickets 2019/20 season and broke down the top order against Crusaders,” he said.

Clint tried to sneak a training session during lockdown and has since learned the seriousness of the mandatory stay-at-home.

“We were practicing as usual when the police came in three vans and chased us off the grounds. I stood up to the officer and said there was less than 10 of us but he didn’t take heed.”

“I’ve since advised all my players to stay at home and to exercise on their own. I generally pray for everyone globally as this pandemic is very serious and people need to adhere to government guidelines,” he said.
