Community works together to feed those in need

After public calls for the community to join forces to start a food distribution programme in the ward, his appeals were answered.

WARD 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter, together with a dedicated team of sponsors and volunteers, heeded the call to help feed those living on the breadline in the community during the lockdown.

After public calls for the community to join forces to start a food distribution programme in the ward, his appeals were answered. Through their undying efforts, a team of volunteers successfully served their first 200 meals on Friday, 17 April. “The Covid-19 lockdown is seriously affecting many of our community members’ ability to put a meal on the table. Our first feeding of prepared meals was a great success. This initiative is aimed at bringing relief to the needy in our community who need this meal to help see them through the day during lockdown,” said Hegter.

He further extended his gratitude to Yellowwood Park Super Spar, who jumped on board to extend a helping hand to the community in which it operates. “Brett and his team kicked off our efforts with a large donation in the form of a voucher and have also placed a donation trolley in store.”

“In these tough times we want to be there for our community and our customers, that’s why Spar has started this amazing challenge to give back, help, and to shed some light and happiness,” said owner, Brett Strydom.

Hegter urges the community to come together in keeping this programme going in order to provide relief to those who need it most. “To make this work we need to stand together as a community. It only takes R20 to provide a meal for one person a day. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Together we can put a meal on a families table.”
