Bluff rugby player aspires to reach new heights

THE exhilarating rush, tackles and scrums of rugby are what fuel Donavan Dauth’s competitive fire on the field.

He is one of the talented players who made the cut for the Sharks LSEN (Leaners with Special Education Needs) Youth Rugby team last year. The team travelled to Newcastle for a week’s training camp and then to Bloemfontein to play in a national tournament, where he scored two tries in the first game.

The rugga player displays a lot of potential and has been awarded numerous trophies, certificates and medals from the Harlequins Rugby Club. Among these awards he was recognised as the most improved player and most enthusiastic player of the year. He has also played for Harlequins in their junior rugby league as well as their Colts league.

Donavan is a Grade 9 learner at Kenmont School on the Bluff. “I started playing rugby when I was five years old. My brother played rugby and I wanted to play as well, so I joined Harlequins Junior Rugby Club. I have enjoyed the sport ever since. I love the team spirit and the contact that comes with the sport. I am very competitive so it satisfies that part of me. It is certainly my passion.
Following in his brother’s footsteps, he currently plays for Durban Academy’s first rugby team, as the sport isn’t offered at his own school. And the 17-year-old has proven to be a perfect fit for the team.

The coronavirus lockdown has unfortunately put his plans for this year’s rugby season on hold. “The season’s entire games, camps and tours have been suspended until further notice or cancelled. I was especially looking forward to the Rugby Camp at Durban North College and the tour to Johannesburg,” he said.
He aspires to be a professional rugby player for the Sharks and also go on to represent his country by playing for the Springboks one day.
