Ward 64 A-team continues its mission to support vulnerable households

The programme depends solely on the donations and assistance from volunteers, sponsors and a dedicated bunch of residents.

THE ward 64 food relief programme has been making steady progress in the short time that it has been operating. The number of meals going out to those in need have been increasing by the day and more helping hands are joining in. “The Food for Life organisation has come on board to assist us. This incredible organisation is feeding about 3000 people per day. They are helping us with 150 meals a day. This takes a huge load off of our community,” said ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter.

The programme depends solely on the donations and assistance from volunteers, sponsors and a dedicated bunch of residents. According to Hegter, ward councillors in eThekwini were instructed to urgently to go to a venue in King Dinizulu Road to receive 15 food parcels per councillor on Saturday afternoon, 25 April. “The Speaker’s Office message said that the KZN Department of Social Development had made 1500 parcels available to eThekwini. The handout itself was complete chaos. There was no social distancing, no order and constant tension and threats of violence. Many of us waited for three or four hours and unfortunately left with nothing,” he said.

Hegter extends his heartfelt gratitude to all those who have played a role in keeping the food relief programme alive. “We are very grateful for the donations dropped off the at the trolleys at Pick n Pay at Montclair Mall and Yellowwood Park Super Spar. Just that little donation to the trolley helps put a meal on the table of a community member in need of your help,” said Hegter. He also thanked Shawn from Kombat Force who willingly stepped up and has provided a security guard for the volunteers who prepare the meals at the Wanderers Sports Cub kitchen. “Shawn has also secured a large number of donations that include rice and a 400 loaves of bread. Every bit of assistance is greatly appreciated,” he said.
