Councillor sheds light on Covid-19 isolation facility in Montclair
Ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter, confirmed the widespread rumours in the area about the use of the old Transnet hostel in Crozier Rd, Montclair as a field hospital to manage virus infections.
MONTCLAIR is one of the latest suburbs in the Durban South Basin to have a Covid-19 isolation facility, much to the community’s disapproval.
Ward 64 councillor, Gavin Hegter, confirmed the widespread rumours in the area about the use of the old Transnet hostel in Crozier Rd, Montclair as a field hospital to manage virus infections.
“This has been confirmed. I spoke to the district director for health in eThekwini today. She assured me that there is absolutely no need for panic. The health department has leased the building as part of the isolation facility at Clairwood Hospital. There is a lot of pressure on the department to manage this outbreak and since the hospital doesn’t have enough space to isolate patients and that is why they have sought to use this building.”
Hegter, who is also a member on the eThekwini Health Committee, shared that the facility, which can house about 300 patients, is being used to isolate people who have tested positive, but are not showing symptoms.
“All occupants of the facility have been confined to their rooms and will not be permitted to leave until they test negative. I have also expressed any other concerns with the hospital. There will be absolutely no threat to the community,” he said, adding that people should not worry as this will be managed and controlled by Clairwood Hospital ensuring necessary protocols are in place.
