10-year-old helps fight Covid-19 in her community

SHERRY King, 10, has taken the initiative to help contain the spread of Covid-19 by making face masks which have become a great need in these trying times.

It all started when her father, Charles, and his fellow co-workers required face masks in order to be safe at work. Her mother, Bernadine, made and donated 100 to the team and Sherry was inspired. “My parents have taught me to help where ever I can, no matter how big or small, everything counts at the end of the day in God’s eyes. We have since donated masks to people around ward 64, widows, petrol pump attendants, the elderly, security guards and the less fortune just to name a few. I believe that any good you do in someone’s life makes a difference,” said the Grade 5 Yellowwood Park Primary School learner.

Together with the help of her parents, brother and grandmother, she makes plain and colourful three layer masks with a filter to help prevent the spread of germs. Masks are also available for sale to the greater public in Yellowwood Park and Montclair for R25 each. “We sanitise all the masks. When dealing with money we have to sanitise our hands before entering the house. It has been a lot of hard work with long hours, but the smiles we see on people’s faces makes it all worth it,” she said.

The 10-year-old does admit that the lockdown has affected her as she misses school as well as being able to do some of her charity work and visits to the SPCA. “I love fundraising and collecting for different charities such as the SPCA Springfield Park and Mothers of Hope. It has also been really hard since I can’t see the rest of my family. I also miss my friends and teachers,” said Sherry who looks forward to seeing all her loved again.
